When is the best time to visit Iceland?

Quick answer

The best time to visit Iceland depends on what you want to see: June to August has the warmest weather (about 10–15°C), near-endless daylight and every road open, while late September to March is the season for the Northern Lights. For fewer crowds with still-good conditions, May and September are the sweet spot.

Summer (June–August)

The warmest and busiest season — 10–15°C, up to 24 hours of daylight around the solstice, and all Highland roads open. Best for the Golden Circle, the South Coast, Snæfellsnes and long touring days. The Northern Lights are not visible because the nights aren't dark.

Winter (November–March)

Cold (around 0°C or below), short daylight and the best chance of the Northern Lights. Roads and weather can change fast, which is when a private driver really earns its keep.

Shoulder seasons (April–May, September–October)

The sweet spot for many visitors: fewer crowds, lower prices, decent weather and — in late September and October — a real chance of the aurora on a clear night.

Which is right for you?

  • Long daylight and every road open: June–August.
  • Northern Lights: October–March.
  • Fewer crowds and good value: May or September.
